Back in the day, the "S" identifier was definitely more flexible than people realize now. Before the 18 series kicked in around '87, you absolutely saw support MOSs with that SQI. It wasn't just the core team guys like 11B or 05B; if you were SF qualified and serving in a slot that required it, even in supply (76Y) or admin (71L), you carried that S. I remember seeing plenty of "S" suffixes on the jump manifests for clerks and commo tech guys who had finished the Q-course but stayed in their primary trade to keep the group running. It wasn't about the MOS mapping to a specific A-team seat so much as it was about the individual being qualified and assigned to an SF unit.
