Fired over a social media post that his firm felt was denigrating to Blacks and Muslims, a former McCarter & English associate said the legal profession is growing more hostile to those with conservative viewpoints.

William D. Brown Jr., who worked at McCarter & English for nearly seven years, said he was fired in late December 2023 over his post on LinkedIn discussing “gangsta rap” lyrics and violence in the Muslim world.

Brown maintained that his posting was innocuous and that his dismissal was part of a “political purge” of conservatives at law firms.

“In a civilized society, we have to have the freedom to talk about the things that are important if we want to get to the root cause of 9/11, Oct. 7. And I think as an educated, civil society and in the legal community, we should have the freedom to address these things,” Brown said.

The post that prompted his firing referenced Brown’s experience serving as a Navy SEAL in Iraq, where, he wrote, “There are many beautiful and tolerant Muslims, but the textual language within the Koran is far from tolerant.”

The posting also said that “[t]he promotion of anti-social values and the glorification of violence and drugs portrayed in gangsta rap had a huge negative influence on the many young and easily impressionable American black youth.”

The post went on to say that ”[i]t’s my opinion that there’s also a radical culture within the Islamic world that promotes anti social values and glorifies violence. This has had a devastating impact on millions of young and easily influenced lives.”
