His response was something to the effect of 'Do you want them to learn the basic of math, or would you rather them fail because they don't use the prescribed process'.
Worse yet the schools can't leave a child behind so they graduate kids who do not understand the basics and will have a extremely difficult time succeeding in the real world.
I would wager that China, Russia and India are already taking full advantage of this decline. Hell, they probably gave grants to Academia to create these new and improved teaching methods.

I have had this same argument with my daughter (5th grade Math teacher). She says rote teaching, i.e. multiplication tables doesn't work. I merely said it was enough to build this country and put men on the moon. As for those "grants" for new methods...try researching something called "Singapore Math." That was a huge push a few years ago.
