Kansas Green Beret Receives Silver Star

FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. -- A Green Beret from Kansas is awarded the Army's third-highest honor for his actions during a raid on a suspected terrorist hideout in Iraq.

Master Sgt. Kelly Mahon, 40, of Virgil, was awarded the Silver Star for pulling a wounded soldier to safety through heavy gunfire in Ar Ramadi on Sept. 11, 2003. The Army said Mahon later braved enemy fire to throw a grenade that killed an al-Qaida terrorist.

The wounded soldier died, but the Army said Mahon's leadership saved "untold lives."

Silver Star medals were pinned on Mahon and another Green Beret during a ceremony Thursday at Fort Campbell, Ky.
