Not entirely new. I have long been bothered by the practice of naming individuals as "unindicted co-conspirators" in conspiracy cases. This seems to have the same effect of besmirching one's reputation without giving him or her the opportunity to defend themselves. Of course, I am also bothered by "perp walks" and other tactics by police agencies to besmirch reputations and potentially bias jurors before a suspect has even been indicted.
