I’ve visited the Google campus and know a couple of folks working there.
It’s a pretty amazing place with some pretty amazingly talented people. But it is a reality distortion field that prevents people from understanding that the other 99.9% of the world doesn’t generated even 1% of the same profit per employee that they do.
I’ve spent a lot of time in Silicon Valley and studying at Stanford so I have a pretty decent understanding of the local culture.
I would never say I understand exactly how it feels to have been discriminated against for being black/gay/etc.
But as Mark Twain said, “History does not repeat itself, but it rhymes.”
I teach an intro to bias(not the weird stuff) as part of a bigger program on problem solving.
Comfirmation
Conformity
Sunk Cost Fallacy
Halo Effect
Some good stuff to know when conducting small team problem solving.
Algorithmic Bias is 2 levels of magnitude more complex when it comes to something like Google Search Rank.
I don’t like regulation(beyond the necessary), but I wonder if auditing algorithms such as Google Search Rank would be a good idea on an ongoing basis.
It’s like a living entity that is constantly being updated and evolving with the input of hundreds of people. Biased people.
Used by billions and kept in a locked box beyond what can be learned from reverse engineering search results.
“Don’t be Biased” > “Don’t be Evil.”
