Without digging around on the bookshelf I believe those 2 senators were originally to be appointed by the state legislatures (and subject to their recall at the state's choosing). And you're right; there was much gnashing of teeth over that.
Many states have their own version of "flyover" country; 1 or 2 major metro hives who think they run the state (and sometimes do) with more rural/small-suburban towns in the actual bulk of the real estate. NY, IL, and CA are the shining examples of that (their biggest power centers aren't even the state capital). But many states have the same problem.
