California's Interstate Highway 5 runs the length of the Central Valley and beyond, but it's an outdated 2 lanes in each direction. It's plagued with hours-long traffic jams every time there's an accident, which is often. Nearly all of California's commerce is trucked up and down that highway. A year ago we traveled I-5 at Christmas and it took hours longer because of an accident. I had plenty of time to read the billboards every 2-3 miles - billboards that touted how great the new high speed rail would be, how convenient, how fast, how much better it was than sitting in traffic on I-5.
That high speed rail money would have been better spent on I-5 upgrades.

This is a leftist attack on automobiles.
Also, I think a lot of this is just a land grab. As people leave the state and crime and homelessness increases people, like me, will be willing to sell their homes for less just to be done with the place. We left $250k to $300k behind just because we were desperate to be done with that state.
