BUT, like many he had ZERO business sense. He would give away inventions or not bother to patent them. Then people like Henry Arms and Winchester would make themselves famous with his folly..
My G-Grand Dad was the same. He was a piratical tinker without business sense. He developed the rubber knee pad used on Singer sowing machine, sold them to factory workers in the clothing district in NYC for $00.02 each. Tried to patent the Idea, but didn't have the 10 USD to pay a lawyer, so Singer grabbed the idea and run with it.
PS: I have my own Safety Pin of my Jacket,, just in case??..
