At that time support people, or people assigned to the group and not yet Airborne qualified, wore the Green beret with no bar or flash just the Regimental crest. Of course this was in the early Sixties. When I first went to the 17th, in June '61 the Green Beret was not authorized yet.

I was drafted into the 5th group in the Fall of 1965 to serve as a Como specialist in RVN. After my tour was finished, I was asked to stay in SF, I humbly accepted and always felt gratitude toward my many friendships made during my tour. At that time non SF qualified personal wore the green beret with a candy bar flash. But in RVN everyone wore a full flash. After I was enlisted to "S" status, I wore a full flash in the third group at Ft. Bragg.
