It's not just the groups themselves, it goes to the "material support" discussion. Based upon the recent history of government agencies loose definition and application of who or what is a domestic threat this is a great way to silence dissent. The political-correctness (reality avoidance) being exercised makes it unpopular to point out what really IS a threat.

In the past as with the MIAC report the SPLC has been the pointman on who and what is designated an extremist or extremeist group. Which is kind of scary considering that most if not all the SPLC's boogy men are White, and they have the opinion that only minorities can be the victims of predjudice and racism.
Someone pointed out last week on well known Left Wing website that BLM is not an extremist group because they are not viewed as a political group or antigovernment.....whereas the folks in Oregon are antigovernment and deserve what they got.....which falls inline with the SPLC's line of thought.
it wouldn't be too far off the mark to say that such a law existed, the 1st Amendment would be gone and any voice that talked out against the government would disappear.
