Thus thread has become pretty bloated, but I thought it would be impolite not to introduce myself before I post. I'm a freshman in college in DC and I'm enrolled in Army ROTC here. I have always wanted to be a soldier, and I jumped at the chance to have the Army foot some of the enormous bill. If all goes well, in four years I will be an officer. I've never been much of a long-term planner, so I really don't know much of what will come after that. Actually, even four years seems like an eternity away.
I'm obviously not SF. I know a few guys that are doing that direct enlistment program with the hopes of being SF, so that got me somewhat interested in all this. It sounds fascinating, but I don't know if I am cut out for it. I don't even really know what I want to branch when I am commissioned. After my initial four years are up, I will evaluate where I am. Maybe someday I will decide that I want to be SF, but at the moment I don't posses the standard ROTC cadet's dreams of glory.
So, for now I plan to lurk this forum, reading what you Quiet Professionals have to say, maybe posting the occasional question.
Anyway, thanks for doing what you do.
