With all due respect, I interpreted the context of that remark to be things like this:

We Jews are hardly monolithic on any issue, though historically we tend to champion causes that are presented as civil rights issues, because we are commanded to remember that we were once strangers in Egypt, and we should never treat strangers the way we were treated, even though we might find ourselves at the top of the social ladder. Which of those causes are genuine civil rights issues is an entirely separate topic.

I think that NurseTim sees the same urgency I do in convincing such people to see Obama and the Democratic party for what they really are.
