The story is BS.

It is based on leftist revisionist media opinion on what happened in El Sal. For example, the Gs killed far more people than the government. Looks like amn opportunity for a brainwashed liberal reporter to try to stir up old muck, expose a new generation to his propoganda, and spin it as a new story.

The US never led or participated in any of those atrocities by either side. To imply that we did (and plan to do so again) is insulting to me and my brothers who served and died to keep El Salvador free. Elements of the Catholic Church, particularly the Jesuits, with their Liberation Theology, were heavily involved in supporting the insurgents. I have personally witnessed a Jesuit priest with a trunk full of guns and ammo smuggling them to the insurgents.

I have friends who were there and became aware of atrocities. Almost invariably, they immediately set upon the path to report and investigate those illegal acts.

If we wanted to start bumping off insurgents (not innocents) in Iraq, the elements would already be in place, we don't need to put anything else there but permission to proceed. We do not engage in those practices, and anyone who would requires approval from the POTUS.
