When I got to the unit in Okinawa, I couldn't find the orderly room. I would ask someone and they'd point to the flag pole and say, "Over there." There was nothing anywhere near the flag-pole. It was just a grassy area with a small shed on it. I checked out the shed and it was an incinerator. I did notice that outside each barrack building there was steps going down into the dark with a sign with a "S" on it. After walking around the grassy area for awhile I found another hole with steps going down. I went down and was confronted with a huge steel door. I opened it and found another steel door that I couldn't open until I closed the first one. There was also a shower in this area. I opened the second door and BINGO, the comm room, crypto room, and orderly room.
I reported and asked what the "S" signs were for and was told that it was the subway entrance and that I could buy a book of tickets for $5. I didn't buy any and later learned they were blast shelters.
While I had been assigned to a nuke ordnance company, I didn't know it since I didn't have a secret clearance yet. Though, when I reported to the CO, I did see about a half dozen photos, on the wall behind him, of mushroom clouds.
