Some people are too insecure in themselves to believe in anything except fanciful notions or to trust anyone.
Minor threadjack: a coworker of mine tried to explain to us that the recent earthquake and resulting tsunami was due to secret Indian nuclear tests and the the US was covering it up. Needless to say his theory was destroyed by anyone within earshot.
