This is a over simplification of both the book and the problem.
Massengale in the book wasn't hated as a staff officer but rather as a incompetent self server.
What the army needs to do at the officer level is buckle down and relearn doctrine and strategy.
Everyone wants to be able to say they can deviate from doctrine. The problem is you have to understand it before you can deviate. Currently I feel most folks don't have a true understanding of army systems anymore.
