I will say that insanity workouts are like any other, they can be a major ass kicker if you put a lot into it. My wife does more of the Zumba/Insanity type workouts and honestly before she talked me into trying it I didn't think very highly of Insanity.

I attribute my recovery from a back injury partly to the core training that comes out of Insanity. It is also very useful if you have limited time and space to get in a quick workout.
