I had a couple of friends who were door gunners on Hueys in Vietnam and they occasionally would shoot at water buffalo that were in rice paddies. They even said that sometimes the tracers would richochet off of the animal depending on where they hit it.
Not cheap, for that particular helicopter I'm guessing about $400.00 per hour to operate.
