Not likely. There is no date for the 720 incident, though, so it's hard to tell if he flew it before the accident or after. The 727s replaced the 720s but there is usually an overlap in equipment in the stable. The fact he was recycled to the radial engine DC-6 from turbines seems more telling. Turbines are slow to respond to power changes and that seemed to be the problem at SLC. The PNF (co-pilot) recognized this but was rebuffed.
On a side note, several victims skeletal remains were found still strapped in their seats. ALL crewmembers survived. I'm surprised that he still had a job after that.
BTW, Laramie "Field" seems to have elevated itself 34' since he was a young whippersnapper.
