If someone really thinks this is a good idea, they must think that it is a good idea to give Israel and Iran a veto over whether Europe gets gas. Depending on your point of view I can see one or the other, but who on the planet earth wants to give both of those nations a veto?
And that is not even counting every small group with a grievance and some explosives.

The Iran-Iraq-Syria pipeline deal and the Arab Gas Pipeline.
One would serve the interests of Shiite governments and the other Sunni governments.
The Shiite interests tend to ally with Russia, the Sunni interests tend with the west.
Russia is a major exporter of gas, and the US will soon be a major exporter.
Plenty of interested parties racing to capture the European market.
Great place to start another world war.
