In Texas, new teachers with less than 5 years experience and teachers in the private school sector were only given a 1 year contract and your annual performance/evaluation determined whether your were offered/not offered another contract.
Tenured public school teachers were only offered a 2 year contract which could be renewed if they met the same performance/evaluation criteria during that two year period.
I'm now in the process of learning how it works out here in NorCal.
