That's the kind of thinking that will perpetuate his psychosis induced self-aggrandizing narcissism. The way to write a letter formed to induce suicidal intent is quite the opposite of what how we'd typically formulate such.
In this case, the worst possible thing we could do to him now would be an open letter signed by the victims and families stating the following:
Dear Mr. Lane,
We love you, and wish you the best. We'll all pray for your soul. We all pray you have a good remainder of your life, at least as good as prison can offer. We feel this, we do this, in spite of you.
With love,
Your friends and neighbors
This couldn't be a singular event however... He should receive further correspondence at least each week from a different victim/family/outsider.
