Time permitting, I would call 911 first. It's been over-litigated here in the Socialist Republic of Chicago. ( "You had time to do xyz, but didn't bother to call 911?"). If the threat is imminent, absolutely defend oneself first. With respect and admiration of your experience, I won't touch the subject of tactics.
I can't speak to where a person chooses to store their firearms or why. Some households may have small children and the homeowner decides not to have them readily accessible. Wherever they may be stored, it certainly is part of the investigation.
"After shooting her with both the Mini 14 and the .22-caliber revolver, he dragged her next to Brady. With her still gasping for air, he fired a shot under her chin "up into the cranium," the complaint says."
The above is nothing but what can only be described as an execution. It is beyond setups, ambushes and the like. I would hazard to guess that he changed weapons to make it more personal or as you say "with pleasure". My feeling is that this guy is a monster that was just waiting for an excuse. Then again, it's quite possible he manufactured the whole story in an attempt to justify these killings. Either way, he deserves the maximum penalty.
Did I mention slowly?
