Excellent Book
Uncle Sam's Plantation: How Big Government Enslaves America's Poor and What We Can Do About It
By Star Parker.
This book talks about the hijacking of the "Social Safety Net" by the American Left. She describes the means that have been used to keep minority communities dependent upon the welfare state. While her remedy is extreme (doing away with the entire system and not replacing it), her dissection of the issue is spot on. It's written for your average reader with a lay persons understanding of economics to understand, and it includes her personal history as a subject of the welfare state, and how she got out of the system.
While Parker concentrates her focus on minority communities, the concepts she addresses are easily applied to the poor everywhere else.
It's well worth the $16 in my opinion.
