Those troops assigned to 5th SF Group, and airborne qualified, were authorized to wear beret, full flash, oval, and patch. If on DEROS, completion of the tour, the individual had not been awarded the "S" identifier, then he was no longer authorized wear of SF items. The Exception was the SF Patch on his right shoulder.
There was another category. Those who had completed the "Q" by Correspondance Course, but had not done Robin Sage. Normally the "S" was awarded only after the completion of Robin Sage. The Viet Nam tour itself was considered as equivalent and the "S" was awarded.
