No one ever got poor...
No-one ever got poor in Africa betting that things would get worse rather than better. Things have got progressively worse since decolonisation in all African countries, except for Botswana. Botswana had the great good fortune to find the worlds biggest diamond deposits just after independence. It has a tiny population, and the diamond giant De Beers has effectively calling the shots there. This means that Botswana is the only country in Africa that is not submerged in corruption and crime. Every other country is either a failed state, or as near to it as there is no difference. Liberia, where American slaves returned to turn into a new paradise a few hundred years ago is a basket case who lately asked fellow African countries to pay for their elections. The Arab Spring will confirm the backward gallop to barbarity that Africa specialises in. Egypt is just one of the big ones, so is more visible.
