It's actually: Thou shalt not murder. If it was kill, lethal force in self-defense, capital punishment, abortion in the event that the fetus is a threat to the mothers life, and of course killing animals for food; would all be problematic. Of course, the

The actual translation of the word used in the Ten Commandments: תרצח
Is "do not take a life wantonly", i.e. do not kill without reason. If it were do not kill, there would be an inherent contradiction with other parts of Bible that discuss capital punishment[1] and self-defense[2]
