Hey there, easy on the college cracks. Don't be jealous just because I'm surrounded every day by thousands of gorgeous single women. I have to get some benefit out of living in this hippie-dip town.
I disagree with our new member here on the mudslinging. Not in that I think it should be there; of course not. But that it's anything new. Every single election people crop up and say, 'This is the dirtiest one yet!', but it's only because people tend to have very short memories. I'm sure many of you remember Mr. Dukakis being asked about his feelings on the death penalty if it were his wife raped and murdered. Or the famous 'Daisy' ad implying that Goldwater would lead us straight into nuclear holocaust were he elected. Or, hell, the taunt back in Cleveland's day 'Ma, ma, where's my pa?' (referring to a child he allegedly sired out of wedlock, which was met, after Cleveland's victory, with the retort 'Gone to the White House, ha ha ha!'). There's nothing new about your gripe: I'd be willing to bet every major election in history has had its share of people bitching that 'There's too much mudslinging nowadays! We should get back to the issues!'.
History repeats itself for those who fail to learn from it.
