Do you really believe it was the books and not the movies? 
Lucky for me I didn't have to pass an English 101 test in SFTG because I'm sure at that time in my life at 18 I'd never had gotten any further in the training program, and neither would many others at that time.

I believe that SF is a 'calling' - not too different from the calling missionaries I know received. I knew instantly that it was for me, and that I would do all I could to achieve it.
