While getting my commercial pilot's license in AZ in the '70s, I ran into to them often. If they have been active for awhile, they are easy to see due to the debris they lift. Otherwise, not so much. I hit the latter near Avra Valley airport (now Marana which is now Pinal.
) once and it turned me almost 90 degrees in an instant. I hit one on approach to Ryan Field while landing as I crossed the threshold. It was weak and just lifted me with very little direction change. I just landed long in this case. Nasty little devils.
