I realize this is an old thread, but I wanted to contribute this.
rudelsg2, this story has been one of my favorites since it was introduced to me in the Boy Scouts as a young(er) boy.
I went into the Marines and the first time I heard it referenced, was during an ass-chewing that I am confident resulted mainly from me not being aware of information that the masticating party did in fact have, but shared both incorrectly and incompletely.
Profound pearls sometimes cast before swine, I think. That being said, I have shared this tale (properly) with junior Marines and it can certainly foster an indomitable mindset. I'm not a stellar NCO, and the story isn't magic, but it can really open up potential in some people's worldview.
