On that day I happened to be a student at the TOW/Dragon gunner school at Bragg. I am not 100% sure, but the shuttle breakup happened either just before our lunch break or during it. I learned about it when I went back to the team room for something or other.

When I returned to the class I made a remark about having taken out the shuttle with an errant shot from one of the TOW tubes. The National Guard people attending the class took immediate offense to my remark, especially since most, if not all of the TOW rounds belonged to them. They must have momentarily believed that it was possible to do so. Those would have been some damned long wires.
