I thought about it, I am not finished but to start with in my 'Constellation of Values' as you kindly referred to them... legitimate charities like I hope the Green Beret Foundation or the Wounded Warriors Fund are. I would be disappointed to find out my any portion of contributions went to help fund political machinery or provided high dollars salaries for anyone involved.

The LAW as I understand it they can have there Non-Profit/Tax Exempt status revoked for engaging politics.
I do not truly know the entire motivation behind becoming a political non-profit group, but operating a business Tax Free and possibly the ability to offer write offs in the form of Charitable Donations might be a couple. And as Peregrino mentioned the Gub'ment needs money.
When I referenced 'clandestine political hatchet shops' I did not specify party, nor did I have any single party in mind....I mean all of them. I also did not state they should not exist, only that their non-profit status might be limited or disallowed.
