After further reflection, this seems more like a hot cocoa moment, more than it does a hotsauce moment...have your adopted son help you make a couple mug fulls of hot chocolate, and then while sitting at the kitchen table sipping your hot cocoa, you reflect on what a tough day he/you have both had, and talk about what makes a good day, and what makes a bad day. Talk about how bad days disappoint us, and what we can do to make our days better.
Let that child know that you understand they also had a bad day, and that we all have bad days from time to time, but at the same time are disappointed in how they might have handled the situation. Talk about options for the next time things might be going south. Enjoy your hot cocoa, and enjoy the insight, responses, and reflections you might get from your child as you guide them into understanding how to make a bad day into a good day.
"A father's disappointment can be a very powerful tool."
