IMO, it was way overboard. Especially given the kids age. I watched the clip on you tube, and it looks like mom could use some coping and life management skills on her end, and maybe that's what she will get from Dr. Phil (who probably has his own issues to deal with).

Kids will lie, kids will misbehave, kids will fight. In fact they will do everything that adults do...none of us are perfect. That's the reality of it. How adults set precedence for future behaviour, again IMO, is of importance, and really has little to do with hotsauce and cold showers.

The fact that she makes him hold the hotsauce in his mouth and swish it around a few times leads me to believe there are definately some control/power issues going on, not to mention how she incessantly drags on and on about pulling a blue card and a yellow card at school, and consequences of actions...he is all of six or seven years old, which basically means he has spent a total of 2,555 days here on planet earth, much of that sleeping (we'll say one third of it...) so basically about 1700 days, adopted from Russia, so he hasn't even fully lived his life in Anchorage with this family.

At this age children need to be guided and nurtured. Consequenses are a natural result of the choices we make, not a punishment that is metted out by someone in authority over us and is, in this case more severe than the choice itself. Rewards for correct choices and behaviour also are of importance, and should also be appropriate age wise and emphasized when good choices are made.

The actions used here serve to close off any form of open relationship that might develop between parent and child, especially as that child grows up and matures into adulthood. Not to mention the needless yelling at the child. There is no discussion really taking place.

Anyways, on a different note, here in Texas my 8 y.o. niece and nephew (twins) love jalepenos and put hotsauce on their food! They would much rather have that than their playtime taken away.
