The official Iranian stance is that she was a drug smuggler. He first charge was that she was a spy. When that was questioned by the Dutch Government they added drugs and several other things to the charges. Dutch authorities were still trying to work out legal issues when she was hung. Supposedly she was carrying 40 pounds of cocaine.

Iran today is kind of like the scene in "Casablanca" where Inspector Renault informs Victor Laslo that Ugarte is dead and that he and Major Strasser are trying to decide if Ugarte committed suicide or was killed trying to escape!
