My daughter has been a music teacher now for over 10 years in elementary and middle schools in NJ and has stories about this crap that you won't believe. This past summer, as part of her continuing development as a teacher (she has both a double bachelors and a masters) she had to take a course in dealing with how to work with unruly students. The atmosphere was one of how to be nice, be acccomodating, etc. As in most of these touchy feely courses they all sit around a conference table, introduce themselves to each other and share their own philosophy of how to resolve these problems prior to the start of the program. When it came to her philosophy of how to deal with unruly students she calmly said, " I follow my dad's philosophy who first of all told us that if we misbehaved in school he would break both our legs and secondly that he sees no value in negotiating with terrorists".
She got an A in the course and the board of education will reimburse her for the $900.00 she had to lay out to learn how to get along with others. I bet, just to make a point, she will use a wide, red, indelible magic marker. She resembles her Mom a lot.
