There are some threads on chest harnesses as well. A 30 rd
magazine loaded weighs about 1lb. If you were stuffing pockets it might be a bit much, but with something like a basic HSGI Warlord (stowed in your BoB) you could easily get least 16 mags/480 rds or 16lbs that is extremely accessible and the weight well distributed.
In Drivers Ed they told us if we had an 'eventful rides/dangerous rides' generally the fault fell on you the driver.....not always but most of the time. And generally speaking I find that rule of thumb applies to everything.
