I would always remove the mag first, regardless of weapon so that I would not have a chance to let a slide go forward, chamber a round, and chance a slam fire.
The slam fire is the danger of a rifle but not a pistol as much. One of the reason you always place a M1 on safe before letting the bolt go forward. Dam embarrassing what?
