No idea of the accuracy of the USSR’s claims – or how it would work 5K feet underwater in that part of the Gulf - but read in “the oil drum” dot com that the method was used 5 times with a success rate of 80% for them (on land).

The relief well will have to be very deep and when they are able to make a direct hit - it will still be a task to stop the original leak.
