A first-time halibut fisherman from Elmendorf Air Force Base took the lead in the Homer Jackpot Halibut Derby by hauling in a 248-pound fish Saturday while participating in the Veterans Halibut Fishing Tournament.
Skip Torres needed about 45 minutes to bring in the fish, which he caught with Capt. Keith Kalke of Ocean Hunters Charters.
Torres replaces New Mexico angler Cassandra Keyes atop the summer-long derby's leaderboard. Keyes took the lead earlier this month with a 199.4-pound flatfish.
History indicates a bigger fish will eventually knock Torres out of first place. Last year's $40,400 jackpot went to Homer fisherman Thomas Youngblood, whose winner weighed in at 355 pounds.
The derby began in late April and runs through the end of September. Tickets are available daily at the harbor derby booth.
