Education standards in this country have always been a little odd. What is really scary is that European students often know more about our history than we do. Instead of bickering about which way to slant what happened, just teach WHAT HAPPENED, from all sides! Teach WHY people left Europe for a new world. WHAT was the initial reactions from the indigenous peoples and the settlers. WHAT changed in the relationships and why. What caused the beginnings of the civil rights movement, who were the key players and what were their differing opinions. What were the political motivations for keeping the vote from women, for allowing slavery, for breaking treaties with Native Americans, and so on. Just teach it the way it happened, period!
