Fair, but they need us as much if not more than we need them economically. Their economy consists of importing commodities, and exporting cheap goods. With their rapid economic growth they have outstripped their own natural resources since the early 90's so they are reliant on importing commodities, and very vulnerable to having their exports undercut. They could implode very fast economically. They have 1.3 billion people, of which nearly a billion earn less than $2k a year, which is a standard of living equal to Nigeria. The folks on the coast however are much wealthier due to trade. Most Chinese can't even afford the goods they export, there is no middle class. The Chinese government always has this tricky balancing act between the "haves" on the coast, and the majority of "have nots" inland. This is a very unstable situation, and historically when it hits a head, someone like Mao leads them back into isolationism. There is no need to appease them by cutting intelligence efforts.
