August of 47,
It was: Smoke! Smoke! Smoke! (That Cigarette), Western swing. The original Tex Williams version went to number one for sixteen weeks on the Country Charts. A popular version performed by Phil Harris went number one on the Pop Charts in August 1947 and stayed there for six weeks.
And during one of those August weeks, I came a long. Interstingly enough - I am not a smoker - never was. As has been mentiond many times before - being a non-smoker back when they used to put cigerrettes in your C-Rats - was a great advantage. Could trade them for most anything - especially in the field.
