I was taken aside for a special search because I looked suspicious after just saying goodbye to my husband who was on his way to Iraq and
was standing in uniform right next to me until I went through the screening. (Kansas City Airport - each gate has a different screening and we were flying out of separate gates obviously but had anyone used any part of their brain they'd have put two and two together since they had to have seen the entire scene.) I'd gotten emotional - was a little embarrassed about it and really didn't feel like chatting it up with anyone and they took that as me being shifty. I was told that I needed to make eye contact and not look so visibly disturbed. Just thinking about it makes me very angry.
I've got a million more stories as a mom who regularly flies with 3 young children on my own. I've taken to carrying copies of their regulations with me as it pertains to medications because of one particular med I fly with for my son. I've yet to run in to a TSA agent who has the first clue what their regs actually say in terms of hand-checking meds. A supervisor is always called in.
My latest personal favorite is when they'll sit and ask my kids to tell them their names as they go through the first screening. I've got pretty outgoing kids who will respond but I know plenty of young kids who'd melt at a stranger asking them their name - let alone one who you can barely understand.
