In the NJ governor election this past month a very interesting event occurred. Mr. Daggett, a third party candidate challenged Corzine and Christie. Republican Christie won. Independent candidate Chris Daggett got eight percent (8%) or so. At one point he was estimated to have more than 20% of the state’s voters and to be a serious threat to both of the standard party candidates.
Daggett cause was property taxes. Every New Jersey home owner’s nightmare. At any rate, what he proposed was to replace the $5 billion property tax with increases in other sectors to make up for the shift. It was the opening both the Republican and Democrats were looking for… they crushed him. Both parties stopped going at each other long enough to eliminate the third party threat; there was no way either of those group were going to allow a third party to legitimize itself nationally in a gubernatorial election….which brings me to my point: The one party system has been here for some time.
