Only partially correct. The morse code requirement for the Technician class license was dropped in 1991.
However, the morse code requirement to get a General or Amateur Extra Class Ham license was not dropped from the testing requirement until Feb 23, 2007.
That would be most of their lives, they would have had to meet a minimum of 5 wpm to pass the Genearal Class license, plus answer questions of course.
Originally one needed a Gen. Class license to be able to access bands below 30MHz therefore one needed morse code.and so on..
As it happens I am in the process of aquiring my General Class license.
