In my appearance before a judge yesterday in a civil matter, I expressed dismay at what the plaintiff was permitted to do. I relayed something a lawyer friend once told me. He said, "Don't confuse justice with the law." The judge laughed and relayed a story one of his professors told him. "Forget about everything you think you know about the law and what you think is logical. That's your starting place for learning the law."
If the judge thinks the law does not display common sense, where does that leave us lay persons?
