Ok, May 1940? It must have been the invasion of France.

A number of different European countries had bicycle troops in both wars.

I don't know how effective it was but it would have been a good method to keep the soldiers fit and also a way to save on petroleum. It would also have been faster than marching and quiet too.

The NVA and Viet Cong sure put two wheelers to good use, or at least that's what I've heard.
